Just read your post at Parenting.com. I never got the Little House thing either. I was so not into that show, and it was torture for me whenever I was forced to watch it with my parents (forced, because we only had one tv, and dad was the ruler of it). Come to think of it my dad was into all that country stuff: Little House, The Waltons,… Hee-Haw! Of course, I would take any of those over The Lawrence Welk Show. Cubano arrepentido!
You gotta love the Cherry Jones audio version–to me it’s so much more enjoyable than reading it aloud.
Did you know she’s from Paris TN?
I think it was a Latina thing. Even though I was born and raised in the US. I could never relate to Little House and I’ve rarely met a Latina that dug it either.
I think it’s awesome that you’re listening to it with your little girl and that upcoming party sounds ADORABLE!
Those old shows really open an opportunity to discuss how far our American culture has come.
You know, Latinas, if this economy keeps going down the toilet, we may all have to listen/read Little House to learn how to kill our own food…Just saying.
Watching Maria enjoy it, I can see how the story captures a little girl’s imagination. Even mine now, when I consider the loveliness of simple and less is more and the scenes of playing in wide open fields. Lovely.
@meredith, Ms. Jones is fabulous and I had no idea she was a Tennessean.
Oh, good, I'm not the only one. Soo many people I know loved the books & show and I just didn't get it. I loved books like The Little Princess & The Secret Garden though. I'd have to go back and re-read to see the difference between them all.
This brings back a vivid memory of sitting in my 3rd grade classroom in Miami and looking forward to Read Aloud Time where I was first introduced not only to Laura and her Little House, but to the joy of reading. (never got into the tv show – I was a teenager then)
I still read aloud to my teenage kids. =D
