Sure it must. However, how many Americans (who don’t have relatives or ties there) like to visit third-world countries on average? I wonder, too, why we should use exiled Cubans’ opinions as a measuring stick, when opinions are quite clearly divided, and usually influenced by family concerns. Lifting the embargo means giving approval, even tacitly, to a regime too close and too radical for comfort for many of us.
The news likes stories about division. It’s an interesting topic to me because the division is about age and first-hand experience versus a new generation who didn’t lose what the old folks lost.
I’ve met Americans in Cuban during each of my three trips, from those who were staying on their yachts at the Hemingway Marina, to the young and daring who were there just to party — all there illegally.
(I am heading to your blog to tell you about what happened when I looked at my own stats…oy….)
After hearing of Yoani’s beating today, I don’t think I’m much inclined to lift an embargo that would solely benefit those in power. The tourist issue is a double edged sword; so far it hasn’t worked in China, so I don’t hold much hope for it working much in Cuba.
You moved to WordPress? Please email me and let me know which plan you got and how you are managing it…I see you have a lot of stuff I don’t :(
Adriana, I just went and looked for the Yoani story. OMG and ADM.
I don’t have a solid opinion on the embargo these days either. But, something does have to change. Al fin y por Dios.
We can talk WordPress. I will email you.
Adriana, I agree with you that the tourism thing is a double edged sword, but I will give you an example of a place where it did work: Spain.
Don’t get me wrong, Spain and Cuba are/were two countries with very a different history. I just wanted to point out that opening up countries *can* have positive effects.
