I try to speak “proper” Spanish to my two boys, but when my family is around “proper” goes out the window! Around them, I feel comfortable to use all our native slangs, improperness and Spanglish:

¡mira… no llompé en el mueble que lo va brequiál!!!

which of course means: don’t jump on the sofa cause you’re going to break it!

BTW – bien hecho on your podcast interview!

I LOVE that you used the word “chismotiando” – in correct context too! I laughed out loud picturing your dad and the guineas.

Thanks for this sweet glimpse into your as-familiar-as-my-own-Cuban-family.

I think it usually happens that I don’t notice any particular sounds when they’re here, but then when they leave it’s the sound of silence that prevails. Always hate that.

So glad to know all the words to I See the Moon to replace the “la la lala la LA la la” line our family always sang…

  6. Karen says:

Your post reminded me of a audio recording I made of a Christmas gathering long ago – my grandparents, great aunt and uncle and others who are gone now… Grandpa telling a story… Uncle Arnold talking about the Braves, my aunt and grandmother talking about their gardens – all at one time… I miss them.

@ Karen, I envy your recording…it must be sweet to be able to listen to it…only we would get a kick out of it huh? @Nicole viola. I agree with you..the eerie silence gets to me too, i just think my husband is glad he can hear his thoughts…I like that you have a spanish marilyn monroe aunt..i will have to share a picture with you one day of my mom…bleach blonde
