Merry Navidad. Or something like it
I know I cannot be the only one struggling with Holiday What’s It.
The blaring headlines of recession and layoffs and business closings are hard to ignore. My husband has survived two rounds of layoffs, but the company he works for — a media company where I too once worked — laid off nearly 2,000 employees last week. We have numerous friends at newspapers and in other businesses who have lost their jobs, and many others wondering what 2009 will bring.
And so, it would be an under-estimation to say the belt is tightened at our house. And, I already shop consignment, Goodwill, clearance sales and Tar-jay, but harder questions are being asked about “needs” versus “wants.”
And yet, there are these really cute little Spanish T-shirts to sell. But, it feels a little weird and kind of wrong, let me tell you. If you don’t promote and sell, your business suffers. If you do promote, you feel a little slimy. At least I do. It’s a pickle for the small business owner.
So, here’s what I’m saying: If you need a special holiday baby or children’s gift, or baby shower gift, think of us before you run out to the big box store.
Use the code PACHANGA and get 20% off.
Or, better yet, e-mail me (mamahen at lospollitosdicen . biz) and I’ll cut you a special deal. Put “Blog deal” in the subject line on or before Dec. 18.
Not buying nada? Consider sending the blog or business links to a friend who may be. (I will love you even more than I already do.)
The coupon code Now1 will get you 20% off on orders of $30 or more. It expires today, Dec. 8.
All that being said, in the effort to get myself all tinsley-feeling, I pulled this Merry Navidad book off the shelf today and marked some songs to learn with Maria.
This sweet one is on the list for tomorrow:
Campana sobre campana
Asómate a la ventana
Veras al Niño en la cuna.
Belén, campanas de Belén,
Que los ángeles tocan
¿qué nueva nos tráeis?
Recogido tu rebaño
¿a dónde vas, parstorcito?
Voy a llevar al portal
Requesón,
Belén, campanas de Belén,
Que los ángeles tocan
¿qué nueva nos tráeis?<

It’s free!

Campana sobre campana is one of my favorites. And Los peces en el rio is too. Oh, y el burrito sabanero–classic Christmas cheeseball:)
I second Chantel! I love Arre Burriquito, too!
Carrie,
I really like Alegria, alegria, alegria, Noche de Paz y Arbolito, Arbolito.
El Huevo de Chocolate is a great cultural resource for children

I also encourage you to check this Puerto Rican Cultural site … although I'm not Puerto Rican, I grew up there and love the island and its people … there's nothing like a Puerto Rican Aguinaldo … Celebrations during Christmas time & Los Tres Reyes Magos in P.R. are second to none! Enjoy!

These are great you guys…I am going to make a CD for Maria — and for me!
Saludos!
Hermana, there’s nothing wrong with promoting your brand. You have to demonstrate value, that’s all. Just because we have less money doesn’t mean that we should ignore the human spirit. I’m not saying that to sound slimy either, but people are still going to buy if you demonstrate value for them. I write about this in my free newsletter, and I hope you’ll consider subscribing at http://blog.emaildiva.net.
And my favorite Spanish-language carol is Vamos, Pastores, Vamos. But this Guatemalan-American lives in Denver, and my Mexican-American neighbors and I do different things.
Andrea, you may be just what the doctor ordered.
Saludos. I just followed you on Twitter too.
